Behind the Label: Understanding Wooden Bed Claims

By Lynden 14 October 2026

Marketing language can sometimes hide cost-cutting shortcuts, making you think you’re getting one thing when you’re actually getting something lower quality. We believe transparency and accountability should be the standard in the furniture industry, not the exception. That’s why we want to help you understand how certain claims can be misleading, how we support every claim we make, and what to look for so you know you’re getting the genuine quality and value you’re paying for.

Wooden Beds

When a retailer describes a bed as “solid wood” or uses broader terms like “wooden bed” or “oak bed,” you’d naturally expect every component to be made from real, continuous hardwood. In reality, that’s not always the case.

You may actually be getting:

  • Wood Veneer: Commonly used with broader descriptions like “wooden beds,” or even when a specific wood species is mentioned, such as walnut or ash. In many cases, the bed may actually be made from MDF or particleboard with a thin layer of real wood veneer applied on top.

  • Hybrid Construction: Claims like “made from solid wood” may only apply to select components, while other areas use veneer or engineered wood to reduce manufacturing costs.

Our Approach

Every structural part of our bed frames are made from 100% solid timber. From the headboard to the slats, we use genuine solid wood throughout. The only non-wood components are the premium-grade nuts and bolts used to keep your bed sturdy, stable, and squeak-free for years to come.

Signs to Watch For

Check the End Grain: Real wood grain continues naturally over the edges of the timber. If the pattern suddenly stops or appears printed on the surface, it’s likely veneer.

Weight and Feel: Solid wood feels heavier and stays close to room temperature. Veneered furniture often feels lighter, colder, and more synthetic or plastic-like to the touch.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

Greenwashing is common across many industries, and furniture is no exception. Terms like “green,” “sustainable,” and “eco-friendly” are often overused, and many claims may be:

  • Unverified - This can include vague statements without supporting evidence, measurable data, or transparent sourcing information about where the wood actually comes from.

  • Overstated - Some companies highlight small eco-friendly features, such as recyclable packaging, while overlooking the environmental impact of mass-produced furniture that isn’t built to last.

Our Approach

We focus on three key areas: the materials we use, how we deliver your bed, and how we give back.

Responsibly Sourced Wood

Choosing solid timber over engineered alternatives means our beds are built to last significantly longer, reducing unnecessary waste over time. At the end of its lifespan, solid wood can also be fully recycled instead of ending up in a landfill.

We trace every tree we use, from responsibly managed forests to our workshop. This helps ensure sustainable harvesting practices and fair treatment of workers throughout our supply chain.

We source our timber from the following regions:

  • United States & Canada — Oak, walnut, ash, maple, and cherry

  • Croatia & Germany — Beech

  • West Africa (primarily Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana) — Sapele, a more sustainable alternative to mahogany

  • Finland & Sweden — Pine

Manufacturing & Delivery

Every bed is made to order in our Leicestershire workshop, meaning nothing is produced unnecessarily. From there, it ships directly to your home without passing through warehouses or third-party retailers.

Our space-efficient flat-pack design also allows us to maximize delivery efficiency. By minimizing overproduction and unnecessary transportation, we help reduce the overall carbon footprint of every bed we make.

Tree Planting Initiative

To date, we’ve planted more than 115,000 trees, primarily in Kenya, through the International Tree Foundation. This initiative focuses on:

Ecosystem Restoration - Helping restore natural habitats, support biodiversity, and protect threatened tree species.

Supporting Local Farming - Integrating trees into agricultural systems to improve soil quality and increase crop yields for local farmers.

Carbon Capture - Each tree planted helps absorb carbon emissions, offsetting part of the environmental impact created by transporting timber from managed forests to our workshop and ultimately to your home.

Handcrafted vs. Handmade Beds

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, there is an important difference between “handmade” and “handcrafted.”

A handmade product is created entirely by hand, while handcrafted furniture combines skilled craftsmanship with select machinery during the manufacturing process.

Our Approach

Our beds go through a 17-step production process that combines the precision of modern machinery with the character and detail of artisan craftsmanship.

For example, we use machinery to create mortise-and-tenon joints because it allows for tighter tolerances than can consistently be achieved by hand alone. The result is a sturdier, more rigid frame that’s less likely to loosen or wobble over time.

Other steps, including staining, finishing, and portions of the sanding process, are completed by hand to give every piece an authentic handcrafted feel.

That’s why we describe our beds as handcrafted rather than handmade.

Signs to Watch For

Some companies use terms like “handcrafted” to describe mass-produced furniture that was simply assembled or packaged by hand.

If a bed relies heavily on plastic cam-locks or thin metal brackets instead of proper wood-to-wood joinery, it’s unlikely to be a genuinely handcrafted piece.

Our Commitment to You

We don’t just sell beds — we create the centerpiece of your bedroom. Our commitment to transparency means:

  • Complete Transparency - From the materials we use to the way each bed is built

  • Direct-to-Consumer Pricing - No retail markups, just fair pricing on premium sustainable materials

  • 11-Year Warranty - We don’t just talk about quality; we stand behind it for more than a decade.
